Usually, the dealers charge a premium when it comes to these things, so you not only get hit with a big markup on parts but the outrageous labor rates as well. When we think of vehicle parts that regularly wear down and need replacement, these may include brake pads and spark plugs. But while they may not require replacement as often, the door handles that you and your passengers use every time you get in and out of your car can wear out too. Here are the steps on how to go about repairing this important part of your car by yourself.
Difficulty level: Easy Things you'll need:. Flathead screwdriver. Phillips screwdriver. Hammer. Pliers Step 1:After preparing all the tools needed, carefully remove the inside door panel using your Phillips screwdriver, and then remove the Phillips screws that secure the panel. Use a flathead screwdriver to get the panel out of the small plastic clips holding it in place.
Do this carefully to prevent damaging the panel. Do not forget to take note of the proper placement of the parts to avoid hassle later on. You may take pictures of them or just memorize it mentally if you can. Step 2:Before taking off the door cover completely, you need to gently unhook the interior door handle that has the locking and opening mechanisms inside it. Carefully unhook the cover from the top of the door, right under the window. The only thing left that attaches the cover to the door should be the two rods linking the interior handle to the locking mechanism and the exterior handle. Step 3:Remove the silicone plastic covering from the holes in the doors.
Remove the bolts from the front door or behind the plastic cover (whichever needs repair). There is locking mechanism behind the rear door that also needs to be removed. After getting off all the bolts from the handle, you can then get the handle.
Step 4:At this point you can now work on the handle itself. This guide is for the broken part that connects to the opening rod. Gently remove the spring that holds the rod, the spring, and the rubber joiner. With a hammer to one end, you can carefully bang the rod out a bit. With a pair of pliers and some twisting you can easily pull it out on the other end. Don't let the spring fly out, and remove the rubber ring around the parts. Remember to separate the parts from each other, and then replace the broken part with a new one.
Step 5:Do the opposite to put them all back together to complete the handle mechanism. Step 6:Putting everything back where it belongs is a little tricky, seeing as everything is meant to fit just right. Install the handle and the door panel back together, and do not forget to secure and screw everything back together.
